Champions League Celtic newsToday is the day we find out who our first European opponents will be. Exciting times!! I had a quick look to see if there might be any potential banana skin teams to watch out for.

As expected UEFA have split the draw up geographically cutting out the possibility- for now- of a long journey into the eastern edge of European football.

Thankfully it does not appear that any side in this qualifying round will give us much trouble.

Below is a list of how all of our potential opponents did last season in European football. Scores are Aggregate. Highest ranked team first.
(ICE) FH Lost 2-1 AIK Europa League 2nd Qualifying Round
(WAL) The New Saints Lost 3-0 Helsingborgs Champions League 2nd Qualifying Round
(IRE) Sligo Rovers Lost 4-2 Spartak Trnava Europa League 2nd Qualifying Round
(NIR) Cliftonville Lost 4-1 Kalmarr Europa League 1st Qualifying Round
(LAT) Daugava Daugavpils Lost 3-3(A) S?duva Marijampol? Europa League 1st Qualifying Round
(EST) Nõmme Kalju Lost 4-2 Khazar Lankaran Europa League 1st Qualifying Round
Only two of the unseeded teams managed in today’s draw managed to knock opponents out of Europe last year. Icelandic team FH beat Eschen of Liechtenstein in the Europa League first round and Shirak of Armenia disposed of Montenegro outfit Rudar Pljevlja in the same round.
It is worth noting that the teams from Iceland, Latvia, Ireland, Kazakhstan, Faroe Islands, Latvia and Estonia have already started their season and are about 10 games into their respective campaigns but I doubt that will be an issue.
Realistically, whoever we get will be an easier prospect than any other team we have played in Europe under Neil Lennon. We have the European experience now to not get caught out. This is football though and we must still be professional but I can’t see any trouble for us.

I reckon we should be upto speed the opening fixture and while I like to keep my eye on irish football and consider it a much improved league I cant see us doing them any favours even without Wanyama and Hoops….On the upside, its time for Kayal to step up and shake off wanyamas shadow! Not an easy task!

cue the demands/protestations, that the Union fleg be flown over Belfast City Hall on the day of the game! First & foremost, let’s qualify, but glad that the Reds will make a tidy sum in the process. H x 2
