Neil Lennon has confirmed his interest in Richard Dunne.
The defender missed the whole of last season at Aston Villa through injury but played for 25 minutes of Irelad’s 4-0 win over Georgia on Sunday.
Villa won’t be offering Dunne a new deal as Paul Lambert drives the wage bill down with Neil Lennon interested in taking the defender to Celtic.
“Richard is a player I’ve always known and always liked,” the hoops boss admitted. “He has not played for a long time and I don’t know what kind of condition he is in.
“The way we have been signing players over the years, he would fall out of that category but we have signed players like Daniel Majstorovic and it is good to have one or two experienced players in.”
Lennon has made no secret of his wish to bring in more experienced players to supplement his young squad.
None of the current first team squad are over 30 with Kris Commons, Scott Brown and Georgios Samaras the most experienced players in Lennon’s side.
Dunne has played in the Premiership for over a decade at Everton, Manchester City and Villa as well as being a first pick for Ireland over the same period.
Speaking about his future at the weekend Dunne explained: “I want to go somewhere where I’m happy and my family is happy. It’s important I go somewhere I will play. I don’t want to sign for a team and then spend next season in a gym again.

I think that the one major flaw in our current player buying policy is that we don’t have enough experienced players to help the young guys develop. Too many of the youngsters end up moving on without having developed as players, and hence, we don’t make any money on them.
For example, a guy with Dunne’s experience could have made a huge difference to Rogne, who’s on his way out now without improving much or really finding his feet. And I’m also sure that he could even help Wilson and Ambrose develop into better players.
I often wonder how Henrik would have developed without the older, more experienced players to guide him.
If we’re going to keep developing players and moving them on for a profit, we should do it as efficiently as possible. For me, that means having a couple of experienced players in the team to guide the youngsters.
No problem with bringing in a class experienced player….I don’t think of the side as particularly young / inexperienced though. Dortmund were younger and had no real problems.
Should learn from Dan Bombscare..highly experienced, slow as they come and useless.
Dunne has done nothing of any note in the past couple of years so why bother, Villa have many young players so he should be ideal for them…but they seemingly know better !
26-28 would be my limits on experience unless exceptional talent…which Dunne fails t meet…no more Daryl Murphy’s please
Yeah, I don’t disagree with any of that, apart from the age limit. I was just using Dunne as an example. The main criteria for me is that they are good players and can still play alongside the youngsters at the highest level. Big Dan had experience in terms of years, but, playing at Celtic’s level, he wasn’t confident enough in his own ability to be able to help anyone else.
I’m sure our youngsters get a lot of good advice from NL and his coaches, but it’s not the same as actually playing with someone experienced.
Richard Dunne, Kevin Doyle???
Hmmm. Is this really the class of player we are seriously looking at?
You can’t teach experience you’ve got to earn it. In their day those two players were I admit top quality but not now. Would they make us better in the SPL?
Maybe, would they be able to take us to a further level in Europe? I think not.
I think if we can’t get the likes of Anton Ferdinand or the Welsh CH Gabidon, then we stick with what we’ve got and promote one of the young bhoys.
Hail hail
If we can get someone of the ability of a Lubo, Pat Stanton, Robbie Keane then yes go for it…..but there is no way Dunne or Doyle would improve our chances in CL.
Not needed for SPL, we have enough young talent that would burst a gut to get a chance and ensure our top players don’t need to play more than 30-35 games a season…no more of this sending them off on holidays nonsense. Get them a rest during the season proper, show a bit more faith in our talent within the club.
I agree totally with your comments Williebhoy. We have lots of talent at the club in various positions. Play them at the appropriate time and let them gently pick up the necessary experience. Any signings from outside should be to help improve us at a higher level. Lubo’s and Henrik’s can be picked up by good scouting.
We have need of a good experience defender I don’t like the two we have One give the two goals away against Juv We need players how can play in Europe we can manage in Scotland ok
