SPFL amazingly agree Hearts’ Danny Wilson deal

The newly formed Scottish Professional League has got off to a blundering start by allowing Hearts to sign and register Danny Wilson.

Following a week in which staff have been made redundant, players have been made redundant or taken 50% pay cuts alongside fans being urged to buy a second season ticket the decision to allow the registration of the former Liverpool defender defies all logic.

Wilson was unveiled at Tynecastle earlier this season as a ‘signing’ but once the club moved into administration it was revealed that his registration hadn’t been completed with the SFA.

At the time of the transfer Hearts were in the midst of a desperate push to sell season tickets with Wilson’s arrival held up as an example of the club’s financial well being.

Hearts have announced that the former Liverpool defender has taken a pay cut to move to Tynecastle with the SPFL showing that financial fair play isn’t a priority as they launch a new era in Scottish football.

A statement from the SPFL said: “The SPFL Player Registration of Heart of Midlothian FC player Danny Wilson would, had he not agreed a contract extension, have terminated on 30 June.

“The SPFL has now received documents extending the contract of the player.

“As a result, the Player’s existing SPFL registration is automatically extended and is not affected by the embargo on new SPFL Player Registrations currently in place on Heart of Midlothian FC as a result of Heart of Midlothian plc (in administration) being in administration.”

The wording of the statement seems to suggest that it is a continuous registration however it’s highly unlikely that the loan deal agreed in January ran until the end of June covering six weeks without Hearts playing a single match.

While clubs like Hibs, Partick Thistle, St Mirren, Motherwell and Dundee United lose players and attempt to live within their means it seems that Hearts wish to continue with the irresponsible spending of the past that took the club into administration.

Jambos manager Gary Locke, who is working without an assistant, said: “Danny was already due to be part of the team and the administration has made no difference to his status.

“I appreciate that there have been some difficult decisions made regarding player redundancies but given that Danny has agreed to a wage cut and is happy to be playing for Hearts, this gives us an opportunity to improve the team for the forthcoming season so why wouldn’t we jump at the chance to have him on our side?”
