Neil Lennon has sent his congratulations to Wimbledon champion Andy Murray.
The Scot won a thrilling final in straight sets against world number one Novac Djorkavic to become the first Brit to win the mens singles since Fred Perry in 1936.
Murray was one of twitter’s first celebrity users with the social media network in meltdown as congratulations poured in from all four corners of the globe.
From Celtic’s training base in Germany Lennon kept up a running commentary on the match starting with: “Immortality calling you Andy,” followed by “It’s attritional this final …every point is fought for so hard.”
As the final point was won, on Murray’s fourth championship point Lennon tweeted: “Stop the clocks….am getting all emotional for the man…magnificent achievement..Andy Murray ..legend.”
Hoops midfielder Joe Ledley tweeted: “Congratulations to Andy Murray. Unbelievable.” Gary Hooper kept it brief with: “Congratulations @andy_murray #77years.”
Charlie Mulgrew added: “Well done @andy_murray! Great day for Scottish tennis.”
The new champion, who has 1.8m twitter followers tweeted: “Can’t believe what’s just happened!!!!!!!”
Down in SW19 itself the bhoys and ghirls of the Wimbledon CSC joined in with: “Congratulations to @andy_murray from all the guys at WCSC.”
Bizarrely Gary Lineker of the BBC offered: “So thrilled for @andy_murray . You may say I am up his backside, but at present that’s a wonderfully warm and pleasant place.”
Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has almost 4.5m twitter followers and was caught up in the excitement tweeting: “The mental toughness needed in an individual sport is unreal.”
Later the defender tweeted: “Wow….I’ve gone n got me coat as I’ve got chills watching this! What a moment. Serving for the championship.
“Hard work pays off. @andy_murray congrats and well deserved fella.”
