Nelson MandelaThere will be a minute’s applause for Nelson Mandela before tonight’s Motherwell v Celtic SPFL fixture at Fir Park.

The former South African president died last night at the age of 95 prompting a mix of mourning and celebration for an incredible life.

An announcement on the Motherwell twitter account said: “There will be minute of applause prior to tonight’s game to celebrate the life & contribution of anti-apartheid revolutionary Nelson Mandela.”

No announcement has been made by the SPFL about repeating the gesture at tomorrow’s matches across Scotland. Last weekend a minute’s silence was held at all Scottish Cup matches for the victims of the Clutha helicopter tragedy.

A number of English clubs have announced that they will hold a minute of applause before their matches with an official announcement expected by the FA Premiership to celebrate the life of the former South African president.

Mandela was an enthusiastic sportsman taking a prominent role in South Africa’s World Cup triumph in 1995 and was the driving force behind the decision to take the 2010 FIFA World Cup to South Africa.

As news emerged of his death last night tributes were paid from various sources including the Conservative Party who did nothing to denounce apartheid in South Africa throughout the eighties.

Led by the late Margaret Thatcher the British government viewed Mandela as a terrorist before performing a 180 degree change of opinion on his release.

Speaking at the opening of the 2010 World Cup Mandela said: “The people of Africa learnt the lessons of patience and endurance in their long struggle for freedom. May the rewards brought by the Fifa World Cup prove that the long wait for its arrival on African soil has been worth it. Ke nako (It is our time).”

Today over on the sevco site filthy filthy the enlightened ones are still by some majority describing the great man as a terrorist who doesn’t deserved to be applauded or celebrated.

Invincibles? Unmentionables would be more apt to describe this scum.

I guess the morons didn’t appreciate him as much as the rest of Glasgow. What a terrible shame it must be to have to live your life with a brain the same size as a peanut.

GL, why bother with them ?
I wouldn’t go near a Hun shite, if you paid
      me.
Zombies support loyalist scum.In the 1980’s , the apartheid regime supplied loyalists with guns and weaponry. A FACT.

Thatcher called the ANC and Mandela,
‘ terrorists ‘ with many tories saying
Mandela should be hanged. A FACT.

Mandela stood strong in the face of this
adversity,as he strived to end the oppression of his people, from a bigoted
      regime.

      A remarkable icon.with great inner-belief ,
and a strong constitution to make justice
      prevail.

This man faught in his country what we are fighting in ours. Hatred for a person because of his/her colour or creed. The denying of Social justice because of a persons religion remains rampant here and there isn’t a politician here who could have breathed the same air as Mandela.God Bless You Sir.

“For to be free is not merely to cast off one’s chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others.” – Nelson Mandela

One of the most dignified, compassionate, inspirational and bravest men to have ever walked this earth and it is a far poorer place without him.

Rest in Peace Nelson Mandela. A true icon.
