Sickbed Commons slays Motherwell

Kris Commons came off his sickbed to put Motherwell to the sword.

The former Derby County man can do little wrong just now in front of goal taking his tally to seven goals from three games as Celtic hammered Motherwell 5-0.

Commons opened the scoring with a cheeky back-heel just before the half time break then scored an opportunist tap in after 76 minutes as Motherwell caved in to their rampant visitors.

A second hat-trick looked to be on the cards but after starting the day doubtful through a virus Neil Lennon took his former team-mate off with his replacement Bahrudin Atajic completing the scoring with Celtic’s final goal of the night.

“I’ve been laid up in bed all day and not feeling too well,” Commons revealed afterwards.

“I’ve had a bit of flu so I was happy to come off as I was looking up at the clock after about 70 minutes ready for another oxygen tank.

Celtic have found top form just as their Champions League campaign is ending with Commons wondering what might have been as they prepare to face Barcelona in midweek.

“If we were playing at this level consistently in the Champions League, you never know where it might take us.

“That’s all done and dusted now and we must concentrate on next year and the only way we get in that environment next year is winning the league, we’re trying to do that convincingly this year.

“I was looking at a few clips of previous games here and we do sometimes struggle but we carried our form on from the Hearts game. We’re not happy at winning two or three, we want to go on and get five or six.”

Three years ago Commons was a run of the mill midfielder at Derby before a £350,000 fee brought him to Celtic.

Last night Lennon suggested that the 30-year-old was his best pound for pound signing- it’s hard to argue with the view of the Celtic boss.
