Spartak Moscow fans unveiled a banner thanking Aiden McGeady during their 6-1 win over Volga at the weekend.

The former Celtic midfielder has been dropped by coach Valeriy Karpin after refusing to sign a new contract and is unlikely to play another first team match.

Spartak would prefer to sell McGeady in January but with his contract up in the summer the 27-year-old is likely to hold out and leave on a Bosman deal.

McGeady’s availability on a free next summer is bound to interest a number of Premiership sides but having thrived in Moscow for the last three and a half years it’s believed that a move to Spain or Italy.

Everton boss Roberto Martinez is a long term admirer of McGeady with midfielder James McCarthy hopeful of being united with his international colleague in the Goodison midfield.

“He’s obviously a great player,” McCarthy told the Herald in Dublin.  “He’s been in the squads I’ve been in. Day-to-day in training, you can see how much quality he brings to the team. He would be brilliant to have in the Premier League.”

McGeady has made 13 appearances for Spartak this season with Karpin’s side sitting in joint second place in the Russian League with Lokomotiv Moscow, a point behind leaders Zenit.

Despite failing to win any honours since moving to the Russian capital McGeady is a firm favourite with the Spartak fans impressed by his commitment and willingness to adapt to life in the city.

Last month McGeady scored for Ireland in their 3-0 win over Latvia, Martin O’Neill’s first match in charge.
