Watch Paddy McCourt’s latest amazing solo goal for Barnsley

The colours may have changed but the magic of Paddy McCourt remains as recognisable as ever.

Swapping the hoops for the Yorkshire red of Barnsley has opened up a whole new audience for the Derry Pele as Championship fans get the chance to enjoy the magic of a player with unique talent.

At Brighton on Tuesday night managerless Barnsley were badly in need of a point or three with just two wins from 17 matches.

Caretaker boss, and Celtic fan Micky Mellon, took charge of the side on a caretaker basis following the sacking of David Flitcroft, and got off to the ideal start when McCourt opened the scoring in the 35th minute with a goal that no other player on the park could have contemplated.

Scotland star Gordon Greer and former England defender Matthew Upson were among those left chasing shadows by McCourt’s movement. Five minutes into the second half Jacoq Mellis doubled the visitors lead and although Upson pulled a goal back Barnsley held out to claim all three points.

Despite sitting at the bottom of the table Barnsley are only 17 points away from a play-off spot with little to choose from between the bulk of the sides in The Championship.

On Saturday they travel to meet high-flying Burnley before a run of three home matches out of four that gives the club the chance to climb away from the foot of the table.

Leicester City and QPR are currently at the top of the table but every club harbours ambitions of reaching the play-off’s with the hope of winning a £100m Golden Ticket to the Premiership as Crystal Palace demonstrated last season.
