Leigh GriffithsLeigh Griffith’s first goal as a Celtic player took some of the spotlight away from Fraser Forster setting a new Scottish league clean sheet record.

Griffiths arrival from Wolves on transfer deadline day was hardly greeted with street parties among the Celtic family but after two starts for the hoops he’s showing that he could well be a key figure in next season’s Champions League plans.

While the clamour goes up for a big money signing the history of the game suggests that there a hefty transfer fee is no guarantee to success.

Down the years Celtic have been well served by locally sourced strikers from Joe McBride and Willie Wallace through to Dixie Deans, Brian McClair and Scott McDonald making Fir Park a regular starting point for Celtic strikers.

Already after just a couple of weeks together it looks like Griffiths and Anthony Stokes have the making of a genuine partnership with Stokes turning provider this week with a brilliant diagonal ball that set the former Wolves man racing in on goal with Danny Wilson rag-dolled before the ball flew past Jamie McDonald.

Having suffered constant abuse from Hearts fans for over two years the lifelong Hibs fan milked his goal celebration to the max as he blew a kiss to the dwindling Jambos faithful before sliding down on his knees with one young lady getting particularly excited at that action.

Tuesday night at Aberdeen will provide Celtic with a far tougher test but a win over Derek McInnes side will put Celtic 27 points clear and within a handful of points of another title party.

    Joe,

I agree the partnership of Stokes and Griffiths,in the spfl anyway, should score a
    barrowload of goals.

    But Champions League ?

I feel we HAVE TO buy a quality target man,who can link play, and is good in the air.
For me,Griffiths,Stokes or Watt are vying
for the ONE place,to play off this target
    man.

Pay at the gate is the way forward.

    Football is overpriced

    £15 adults
    £5 children

    Less wages for the players

    Its the way forward.

    And Leigh Griffith’s agrees

Personally I was stunned that we signed griffiths but the way he took his goal was top class. So as joe says large price tags can mean nothing. We shall see. Peter I agree that the players you mentioned are playing for one place. Like you I think we will actually end up buying a more expensive striker. HH.

Too many fans jumped in with negative comments when Griffiths’ signing was being considered….and I bet at least some of them were saying the same kinda things when Henrik was signed (I’m not saying he is another Henrik). The very least we can do is give the guy a chance to show what he can do, not what the media “experts” and negative thinking fans say he can/can’t do. Also, spending mad amounts of cash on a player guarantees nothing…Andy Carroll to Liverpool for a king’s ransom (40 million?) and he couldnae score in a barrel of phannies. I’ll stick my neck out now and say that I expect Griffiths to score around 15 by the end of this season, and then to start scoring from the off in the Champion’s League qualifiers and then right through next season. I just have a feeling that we have got a bargain here. HH
