Ally McCoist newsAhead of his side’s Scottish Cup semi-final against Dundee United Ally McCoist has decided to speak out about Tannadice defender Gavin Gunning.

The Dubliner is out of contract in the summer and looks certain to leave Tannadice with a number of English Championship sides and teams on the continent watching his progress.

For a number of reasons Gunning won’t be heading to Ibrox but on the same day that McCoist revealed that he had spoken to two potential signing- who of course he wouldn’t name- he decided to give his views on the 23-year-old defender that his side will be playing against in three weeks time.

“I like Gunning as a player,” the reigning Third Division Manager of the Year admitted. “Any footballer has to look after his family and, if there are question marks over finance, and let’s be honest there have been at our place, it does become an issue.

“I can honestly understand his concern because, as you know, we have been in administration, liquidation, bank loans… it’s only natural.

“Gavin is a good player that is out of  contract but, with the semi-final coming up, it would be totally wrong of me to start commenting on Dundee United players.”

Absolutely it would be wrong to discuss transfer moves about an opposition player three weeks before a Scottish Cup Semi-final. We can be fairly certain that Jackie McNamara won’t indulge in that sort of action.

The credibility of any agent that  enters into transfer talks with McCoist must be called into question. Last summer Nicky Law, Jon Daly, Cameron Bell, Steven Smith and Dick Forster all signed lucrative long term deals with Sevco- in January chief executive Graham Wallace held conceptual discussions over pay cuts. McCoist totally understood why the players rejected that offer.

On the same day that he decided to speak out about Gunning the Sevco boss was keeping tight lipped about other transfer targets.

“I wouldn’t comment at all on players at other clubs because it’s not fair to do that,” he explained. “I have spoken to two players. I can’t give you names but that’s where we are at the moment. The unfortunate position we are in is that we can’t offer anyone anything.

“That’s not ideal but we will continue to do our homework and prepare to move when we can.”

As a shrewd negotiator perhaps McCoist should be paying closer attention to the words and actions of his chief executive.

After over four months in the job Wallace appears to have achieved absolutely nothing- not even a shirt sponsor for next season.

Having told shareholders that there were no short to medium term cash problems in December the club was delighted to announce emergency loans with two shareholders given against security on key assets- the Albion Car Park and Edminston House- to meet the February payroll.

With Dave King jetting back to South Africa with his tale between his legs it seems that McCoist will have more to worry about over the coming weeks that the future of Gavin Gunning.

  • mulsiebhoy says:

No, sleekit one, your club have never been in administration or liquidation. You’ve also never had any bank loans, no institutions are willing to provide a credit facility to this infant club…loans from spivs, secured against the family silver, is another matter! Perhaps, when he speaks about administration and liquidation, he is having a Nostradamus moment! H×2

  • drawkcab says:

sleekit bastard at it again. Given the fact he has admitted speaking to two players without approaching their clubs does that not mean hes guilty of tapping up? i thought that was illegal or is that only to non orange lodge members?

    • mulsiebhoy says:

Scotty bhoy, ‘tapping’ is what they do best, at Snake Mountain…paying it back, is where they struggle! Beggars! H×2

    • Jack says:

depends, in Gunning’s case it wont not be tapping up. Under 6 months left and a player has the freedom to talk to whoever he wants

  • paranoidandroid says:

Honest Ally just can’t help himself, can he? Everything he says is either sneaky, threatening, or utter garbage. And he often manages all three at the same time.

It will take more than Sleekit’s trash talk
to put United off their game.

According to friends in Dublin,Gunning is
    a good Tim,and wouldn’t touch that toxic
    club with a barge pole.

    He wouldn’t do a Judas Daly.The only
‘ token ‘ Irishman to play for this scum in
    the modern era.

As always,Fat Salary is barking up the wrong tree.
