Billy McNeill Celtic newsNeil Lennon believes that the Champions League stakes start at £250m.

With the last eight about to get underway the Celtic boss is on the outside looking in as the super rich prepare to do battle for the game’s greatest prize.

Despite the wealth available in the English Premiership neither Manchester United or Chelsea are viewed as serious contenders with Bayern Munich and PSG expected to scrap it out with Barcelona and Real Madrid for the trophy.

Celtic’s interest ended at the group stage but after back-to-back appearances Lennon is hopeful that Celtic will be better prepared to make an impact in next season’s group stage.

“It’s £250m at that level – Man City can’t do it, they’ve only made the last 16 once,” the Celtic boss said surveying this week’s Champions League action.

“Looking at the latter half of our Champions League campaign this year, we need a bit of extra investment in the squad in terms of quality.

“I want Champions League football every year and to do that we need to bring players in. I have a good core here that I’m very happy with. I just need to add a bit of quality, a few faces.

“Will they throw me a bone? They might. That would be nice.

“Whether you think the board are pragmatic or not, they are very smart. They will go about it the right way and I will be involved in those talks.”

Celtic will have three qualifying rounds to negotiate starting in July if they are to reach the group stages with the first two qualifiers being played at Murrayfield.
