Stevie Frail newsStevie Frail has challenged Celtic’s u-20 side to repeat their Murray Park performance level in the seven remaining fixtures to retain the u-20 title.

The young hoops faced Sevco on Monday night on the back of a disappointing 1-0 defeat at Dunfermline that had allowed their city rivals to edge one point clear at the top of the table.

Despite being without Darnell Fisher, Filip Twardzik and Holmbert Fridjonsson Celtic played without any trepidation to run out 2-0 winners thanks to goals from Conor McLaren and Joe Thomson.

On Monday Celtic face Motherwell (2pm Lennoxtown) followed by Hibs on Thursday (Cappielow 7pm) with Frail stressing to his players the need to hit the heights.

“We have seven games to play in just over the space of a month which is a big ask,” the hoops coach explained. “Everyone talks about consistency and that’s something that we demand of the players.

“It’s important for players to develop but they need to find consistency as well, we’ve been a bit up and down but it was a fantastic result at Murray Park. That gives us some confidence for the remaining games, we know how tough it will be with two teams close to us at the top of the league.

“Monday night was very satisfying but we lost at Dunfermline the previous week and the players know that they fell below the standards that we set, not only in games but in training the players set their standards.

“It’s not often that they fall below those standards, that happened at Dunfermline, but they bounced back on Monday.

“After Dunfermline a few things were said, in a constructive manner. We’re pleased with the reaction and the way that they applied themselves, now they have to sustain that for the remaining seven matches.”

Paul McMullan and Thomson played key roles in Monday night’s win and put down markers to remain in the first XI.

The promotion of Liam Henderson has given all of the players a target to emulate and opened up a vacancy in the u-20 side.

“It’s fantastic that Liam has stepped up and Eoghan (O’Connell) is heading in the same direction,” Frail added. “It’s a squad game and the players that step in get a chance to show what they can do.

“Joe Thomson and Paul McMullan were both excellent on Monday night, we know what they are capable of and they know what is expected of them.”
