Kris Commons and Anthony StokesJohn Hartson has saluted the goal scoring achievements of Kris Commons and Anthony Stokes.

During his time at Celtic the Welshman stated that a striker at the club should always score 20 goals a season- a landmark that he achieved in four of his five seasons at Celtic.

On Sunday Hartson handed out the medals to Neil Lennon’s squad with a special pride to the two men that helped themselves to 53 goals over the course of the season.

“With the amount of chances that Celtic create, with the quality that you have alongside you, 20 goals is a must for a striker,” the Welshman stated. “It’s a realistic target, I could even go higher when you look at people like Henrik Larsson.

“One season I got 31 but Henrik could get 40 and one season he got 50. Stokesy got 21 so he can be happy with his season’s work and with 32 Kris has did remarkable for a midfielder.

“He plays in the hole behind the front two which is great for him, he has real quality, he finds himself in a lot of space, he makes runs into the box like Frank Lampard and has a knack for getting on the end of things.”

Hartson added: “This season has been a little bit predictable but Celtic are like a boxer- they can only beat what is put in front of them. Celtic have did that exceptionally well with just one defeat at Aberdeen.”

In his time at Celtic Hartson scored a total of 110 goals joining the elite band to have hot treble figures in the hoops.

Scott McDonald and Gary Hooper threatened to do that before moving on with Hartson hoping that Stokes can join an exclusive club.

Sunday’s header against Dundee United was the 68th time that he has found the net, with a new contract signed earlier this season he could hit the 100 mark in the next 18 months.

“Stokesy is a great lad and I’m sure he’ll be the next player to score 100 Celtic goals,” Hartson added. “He can create chances for other but he is a box player and showed that with his goal against Dundee United.

“The game was petering out but Celtic came on stronger and Stokesy broke the deadlock, you need players like that.

“He is an out and out goalscorer, records are there to be broken. Henrik was the player to do it before me, he got 242, I got 110, I was the last to break 100 and it’s a fantastic moment.

“You really cement your name in the club’s history. If Stokesy stays at the club for the next two or three season’s he’ll go past my mark- I really believe that.”
