Lisbon Day

Twitter has been turned into Lisbon Day as Celtic fans remember the glorious day 47 years ago when Jock Stein’s side changed the football landscape forever.

A dozen years of latin domination came to an end when 11 men born with 30 miles of Celtic Park took to the pitch in Lisbon to deliver one of the greatest ever displays of attacking football with the Italians lucky to escape with just a 2-1 defeat.

With the big cup back in Lisbon last night the remaining lions flew out to Portugal and were given the red carpet treatment by UEFA and the Lisbon public who remember fondly the football team and the 10,000 fans that made their way to see history being made.

Last night the official @championsleague account tweeted: “This is one for @celticfc fans. Remember 1967? The Lisbon Lions returned to the city of their triumph this morning.

Uefa.com tweeted: “One for celticfc fans. The Lisbon Lions in the #UCLfinal museum this morning. http://instagram.com/p/oYCV58v2i0/

On twitter all sorts of images have been created around the event, mixing 1967 and 2014 with supporters of all ages joining in the acclaim.

Lisbon Lions newsOnly supporters in their mid fifties can recall watching the match and the scenes as the trophy was brought back and taken around a packed Celtic Park but the magic of the day has most certainly been passed down the generations.

With each passing anniversary the celebrations and respect for the Lisbon Lions increases with their place in footballing history assured.

The trophy now seems to be the preserve of the rich as Barcelona, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich contest for it with even English clubs struggling to compete for footballs greatest prize.

But whenever the final comes around or the calendar reaches 25 May the Celtic support will always remember the club’s greatest ever team and how they stormed to glory in Lisbon.
