Virgil van DijkRonny Deila has revealed that he’d like to add two or three players to his Celtic squad- if the quality is right.

The new Celtic boss has still to dip into the transfer market to sign a player with Craig Gordon signing as a free agent and four loan deals concluded.

Signing a striker and centre-half are the main demands from supporters regardless of whether or not the club reaches the group stage of the Champions League.

If Celtic see off the challenge of Maribor they will have six full days to work in the transfer market with Deila not interested in bulking up his squad with fringe players.

“It’s not about numbers, it’s about quality,” he stated. “If we can get players that can make the team better I’d like to bring in two or three. “If we don’t find that it could be zero, we’ll see.”

As well as bringing players in Deila will be hoping to keep the bulk of his side together with Virgil van Dijk the most likely transfer target.

The Dutchman had an outstanding season last term and has naturally attracted the attention of English scouts.

Some fans have been critical of van Dijk’s performances this season with Deila admitting that transfer talk has proved distracting.

“We are wanting to get Virgil back to the top level, we are thinking that he has been a little down at the beginning of the season,” the Celtic boss explained.

“The last two weeks he has been back to his level, he is fit now, much fitter than he was at the end of last season. When he is performing he will do well for Celtic.

“Right now I think that it’s good for him to be here, hopefully playing in the Champions League then develop even more at Celtic.”
