International bhoys on target

John Guidetti, Jason Denayer and Holmbert Fridjonsson have all found the net on u-21 international duty.

New boy Guidetti caught the headlines with a stunning free-kick for Sweden against Greece two days after FIFA over-ruled the SFA to ratify his loan transfer from Manchester City.

Guidetti opened the scoring in the 52nd minute as he set Sweden on course to a 3-0 win that sets up a spectacular final round of matches on Tuesday night with four teams separated by just two points.

Sweden host Turkey on Tuesday night looking for a win while hoping that Greece can win at home to Poland to enable them to pip the Poles to top place.

Denayer scored Belgium’s second goal in a 6-0 win away to Cyprus but it seems unlikely that Belgium will progress. Italy sit a point behind Belgium but will top the group if they win their final match- at home to Cyprus on Tuesday.

Two days after moving on loan to Brondby Fridjonsson scored the opening two goals for Iceland in a  4-0 home win over Armenia. Iceland complete their campaign away to France on Tuesday with the French assured of top spot with Iceland runners-up ahead of Kaxakhstan, Belarus and Armenia.

In Halle Eoghan O’Connell was an unused substitute as Ireland lost 2-0 to Germany while Stewart Findlay and Marcus Fraser were both involved in Scotland’s 1-1 draw away to Slovakia.

The finals will be played in the Czech Republic next summer with the draw for the eight team tournament taking place in November.
