Lennon to face Alan Thompson in first Bolton match.

Bolton have confirmed the appointment of Neil Lennon as their new manager with Johan Mjallby and Garry Parker joining the management team.

Lennon’s first match in charge will be away to Birmingham City on Saturday where his former Celtic assistant, Alan Thompson is part of the backroom staff.

Thompson was side by side with Lennon through his toughest times as Celtic manager but the pair split up in the summer of 2012 after winning the SPL title.

Lennon resigned from the Celtic job in June after four successful seasons and replaces Dougie Freedman in charge of the Championship side.

Just after 2pm the Bolton twitter feed announced: “ are delighted to announce the appointment of Neil Lennon as the club’s new manager.

Lennon, 43, joins after four years at where he won three league titles and two cups.

Lennon will be joined at by assistant manager Johan Mjallby and first team coach Garry Parker. .”

Lennon became caretaker manager of Celtic following the sacking of Tony Mowbray in April 2010 and emerged successful despite suffering a torrid time at the hands of the football authorities and various off the pitch attacks that no UK manager has had to endure.

Despite all that he stuck to his guns and overcame the odds to lead Celtic to the 2012 SPL title overcoming a 15 point deficit against Ally McCoist’s Rangers side.

Once Celtic began to cut the gap, overturning a 15 point deficit in less than two months, the troubles at Ibrox kicked in with the club going into administration followed quickly by liquidation.

When the death knell sounded on the old Rangers Neil Francis Lennon was in the managers seat at Celtic Park with the SPL trophy preparing for the Champions League qualifiers.

Lennon faces a massive challenge at Bolton with the club stuck at the bottom of the table with just five points from 11 matches.

With a debt of £168m he will have to use all of the skills that saw Celtic beat Barcelona less than two years ago to avoid relegation with little prospect of money being made available in January.
