YouTubeThe magic of You Tube never fails to disappoint with long forgotten moments of magic being brought back to life for a new audience.

Celtic’s reserve side of the late eighties wasn’t short on prospects with players such as Stevie Fulton, Gerry Crainey, Gerry Britton, Stuart Balmer, Raymond McStay, Davie Elliot and Alex Mathie always worth watching.

Sadly Creaney and Fulton were the only players to make an impact on the Celtic first team but the others all made their mark to some extent in the game.

Davie Elliot is well remembered by supporters of St Mirren and Partick Thistle where his pace and trickery created havoc for defenders as he raced up and down the left flank.

Last night a clip surfaced on You Tube of Elliot at his best in a derby match against Morton from 1992 with Lex Baillie, Mathie and Paul Lambert also involved.

With St Mirren chasing the game Elliot scored a goal that the commentator rightly compared to the famous strike from John Barnes against Brazil eight years earlier.

These days Elliot is happy pounding the beat for Police Scotland but looks back fondly on his days at Celtic although missing out on a place on the bench for the Joe Miller cup final was painful.

Speaking to Video Celts in 2010 he said: “I was involved in the matches up to the 1989 Scottish Cup Final and was hoping to get a place on the bench but there was only two subs in those days.

“I got a few games, I felt I’d did well and might keep my place but Stevie Fulton was on the bench, if he hadn’t got injured in the semi-final he could have been playing.

“It was hard to put aside my personal disappointment, usually after a win like that I’d have been out celebrating with my mates but that night I was on a bit of a downer because I’d missed out on the final.

“But I’ve absolutely no regrets, I loved every minute of my time at Celtic. We had a great reserve side, I played with lots of good players but the highlight was my first start for Celtic.

“I scored but it was chopped off for offside. It was a shocking mistake, I show everyone the video and no-one can believe it was offside- to this day I’ll claim it.

“There’s a picture of me running away, celebrating my goal then seconds later I was in tears but I treasure that picture.”
