Neil LennonAs he took over the reigns at Bolton Wanderers Neil Lennon left behind the mob mentality that tried to bomb and intimidate him out of Celtic Park.

In the spring of 2011 the Irishman was the subject of a trackside assault at Tynecastle at the same time as Strathclyde Police were dealing with death threats and bullets in the post to the Celtic manager.

As he moved home on a regular basis protected by 24 hour security it would have been understandable if he had decided to up sticks and head away from the hate mob obsessed by him in Glasgow.

Lennon stood strong in the face of the mob and led Celtic to three titles and back to back campaigns in the group stage of the Champions League. Across the city the club of his haters were liquidated with supporters unable to provide a CVA to rescue their club.

The last two years at Celtic were relatively free of flashpoints but after more than a decade in Glasgow concentrating on footballing matters will be a welcome relief for the new Bolton boss.

“Hopefully, that’s an element I have left behind now,” Lennon said referring back to off the pitch hostilities. “I’m really looking forward now, I’m excited. It was a very intense environment, Glasgow, the derbies and the rivalry.

“You miss that a little bit, the edge. This will maybe not be as intense as Glasgow, but I feel four years there can prepare you for most things lying ahead.”

With Bolton at the bottom of the table with just five points from eleven matches Lennon has his work cut out but it’s a task that the Irishman is looking forward to.

“You just try and instil confidence, work pretty hard on the training ground and be patient,” he claimed. “You always need patience when you come into a new job. We’ve got 35 games so there’s plenty of time to get it right.”
