Stevie McLeanBlundering Alan Muir will referee Saturday’s Premiership play-off tie between Queen of the South and Sevco.

Muir was the additional assistant referee at the Celtic v Inverness Caley Thistle Scottish Cup semi-final, charged with providing Steven McLean with extra help.

When Josh Meekings raised his arm to save Leigh Griffiths net-bound header Muir was the closest official to the incident and was seen speaking into his microphone.

What he said has still to be established with Celtic’s letter to the SFA remaining unanswered.

Saturday’s match at Palmerston will be the first of hopefully six matches that will lead to the riches of the top flight of Scottish football.

By putting Muir in charge it would seem that the SFA had no problems with his display at Hampden, since his semi-final appointment Muir has refereed Peterhead v Airdrie and Alloa v Cowedenbeath.

On Saturday McLean will referee the Ross County V St Mirren match, on Saturday he issued yellow cards to Lee Ashcroft and Nigel Hasselbaink despite the players exchanging punches and a head-butt in the Kilmarnock v Hamilton Accies match.

Celtic’s trip to Aberdeen on Sunday will be refereed by Craig Thomson, in his most recent Celtic match, the SPFL fixture at Inverness last month he issued seven yellow cards.

The day after the Scottish Cup semi with Inverness Celtic published the following letter: “WITH the Club being inundated today, Celtic can confirm that it has written to the SFA regarding yesterday’s match and in particular the incident involving Leigh Griffiths and Josh Meekings.

First and foremost we absolutely congratulate Inverness Caledonian Thistle on reaching the Scottish Cup final. They are a fantastic club and reaching the final is a great achievement.

However, given the level of reaction from our supporters and across football, we are duty bound to seek an understanding of what actually happened.

We have not been given any other specific explanation so far and this is simply to understand the circumstances of what went on and why such an obvious error was made.”

It appears that the SFA have still to reply to that letter.
