Champions LeagueCeltic’s Champions League opponents, Stjarnan, lost 1-0 at home to KR Reykjavic tonight.

The defeat leaves Runar Pall Sigmundsson’s side languishing in sixth place in the 12 team Icelandic league- trailing leaders FB by 8 points.

Almarr Ormasson scored the only goal of the game midway through the second half to leave last season’s champions with three wins, three draws and three defeats from their first nine matches.

Stjarnan have two more league matches- both against teams above them in the table- before they face Celtic with the dates of both ties being announced tomorrow morning.

Looking forward to the opening matches of the season Celtic coach John Kennedy said: “We are more aware of Stjarnan because they played Motherwell last year but it has been a long time since then and things have changed. They’re not sitting in as good a position in the league as they finished last season.

They’ve had a few losses as well and are maybe not in as good form as last year, but it’s one we have to be careful of and make sure we do our homework and go in as well-prepared as we can possibly be and hopefully get a result.

We are a squad of players with a lot of quality in it and with the size of club we are we should be expected to beat them. The pressure is on us and that will maybe suit them to come in as underdogs and come in and have a go.

We have to make sure we go in fully prepared and we win the game. That’s the most important thing.”
