Alex FergusonAlex Ferguson has praised the fantastic job that Ally McCoist did as a manager!

The former Manchester United manager was speaking to Radio Clyde last night when he touched on events at Ibrox.

McCoist opened up his managerial reign four years ago with a Champions League exit to Malmo quickly followed by losing out to Maribor in a Europa League play-off.

In the league McCoist lost a 15 point lead to Neil Lennon forcing Craig Whyte to put the club into administration in February 2012 followed by liquidation four months later.

With a salary in excess of £750,000 on offer McCoist teamed up with Charles Green as a founder investor in the new club snapping up shares at one penny before urging fans to invest at 70p per share.

On the park the final straw came last December after a 3-2 Petrofac Training Cup exit to an Alloa side that went on to win one of their next NINETEEN matches.

In-between Malmo and Alloa the former Question of Sport funnyman lost cup-ties to Forfar Athletic, Falkirk, Queen of the South, Raith Rovers and three times to Dundee United including a Scottish Cup semi-final specially staged at Ibrox.

Despite that record Ferguson has nothing but praise for McCoist the manager.

He said: “There was a lot of criticism pointed towards Ally McCoist during his time at Rangers.

You know something, I thought Ally McCoist did a fantastic job under undue pressure and no-one, unless they have been in that position, knows exactly how hard it was.

I have no criticism about Ally McCoist. I am pleased that Rangers are looking to step forward from the bad experiences of a few years.”

As he prepared to step down as Manchester United manager in 2013 Ferguson recommended that the club appoint Davie Moyes as his successor.

Since retiring from management Ferguson has taken on a number of lucrative roles including one as Education Executive with Harvard Business School.
