Waghorn delivers his Champions League plan

A week after being knocked out of the League Cup by St Johnstone Martyn Waghorn is preparing to play in the Champions League.

The 25-year-old journeyman bagged a hat-trick against Morton on Sunday and is now planning a goal spree against the finest clubs in Europe.

Showing a complete disrespect for the Championship opponents who have budgeted in accordance with their income, Waggers has already counted on picking up a Championship winners medal with a Premiership medal next on his wish list

“In the short term the Champions League is not unrealistic,” the former Wigan, Hull and Leicester ace claimed. “It’s realistic if we get promoted, anyone can beat anyone on their day.

“We’re going to set our standards to get into the Champions League, I think that’s realistic for Rangers, how it’s developed and how it’s run.

“We want to be as high as we can as quick as we can. I want to be a part of a successful team and I’ll do anything I can to bring that here.

“You can see in the cup in the previous week teams were knocking out otherteams. The difference isn’t that much anymore, the gap is getting tighterand tighter.

“I want to be part of a Rangers team that is getting into Europe and winning trophies. We just need to concentrate on getting the job done by making sure we getpromotion.”

Should they avoid going into administration and claim a place in the top flight followed by winning the 2017 Premiership title Sevco will find a number of obstacles in the way of a Champions League with battling through three qualifying rounds as an unseeded team the least of their concerns.

With no sign of audited accounts and an expected going concern warning likely to be printed in red letters UEFA’s Financial Fair Play rules will be a major obstacle.

Following the controversial granting of a licence for Rangers (IL) to play in Europe in 2011/12 UEFA have tightened up on a number of licencing issues.

With the asset treansfer of 2012 about to be blown open in court it’s likely that the ownership of Ibrox Stadium and Murray Park will come under close scrutiny.

UEFA insist that the licenced club has ownership of their ground or a leased agreement for at least two season’s before allowing a club to compete in their competition.

Looking back at last week’s League Cup knock out Waggers added: “We just had an off day against St Johnstone and it was there for everyone to see. But we’ve analysed it, learned from it and it will make us better. We will improve.

“The manner of the defeat, but St Johnstone played well and they had a gameplan and scored three very good goals. Sometimes you have to take you hat off and say well done.

Meanwhile Mark Warburton is hoping to complete a deal in the next 48 hours to sign midfield power house John Eustace.
