Van Dijk sets the record straight

Virgil van DijkVirgil van Dijk has turned to twitter to explain comments attributed to him earlier this week.

After a loose translation from Dutch to English and a dose of top spin it appeared that the defender had wasted two seasons of his career before being rescued from the scrapheap by a transfer to Southampton.

While there is no doubt that there is a major gulf between the standards in the English Premier League and SPFL Premiership van Dijk breezed his way to victory at Chelsea last weekend in much the same manner as he brushed aside lower division midfielders in cup semi-finals.

During his two seasons at Celtic the defender was rarely tested domestically prompting debate as to his true ability and worth.

As Celtic’s European performances nose dived van Dijk looked as culpable as anyone else as the goals were shipped.

There was always an air of class about his play that prompted interest in him from a number of English clubs with Southampton delighted to bring in a player from the same source that had unearthed Victor Wanyama and Fraser Forster.

How good van Dijk is will be discovered over the coming months- without doubt two seasons at Celtic added an extra dimension to his game that will allow him to treat clubs like Sunderland, Aston Villa, Watford and Bournemouth in the same manner as he dealt with Scottish opponents.

Having made a huge contribution to titles three and four and generated a £10m profit his contribution to Celtic can never be doubted.

Joe McHugh has edited Video Celts since 2010, every day covering events in and around Scotland's most successful club.

When a six year stretch at the Sunday Mirror came to an end it was clear that the future was digital, print had ran its race.

Smart phones and social media created a new landscape, Video Celts has certainly made an impact with Joe described as having an unhealthy obsession by Peter Lawwell at the 2024 Celtic AGM. A priceless endorsement.

There are issues breaking around the clock, no two days are the same. More than 50 years on from his first match Joe is enjoying the ongoing successes of Celtic.

I suspected that what he meant was more to do with Scottish football in general than any pop at Celtic.

They don’t want to talk about the big story across the city but they’ll trawl all over Europe to find any negative stories involving Celtic.
