Aberdeen failed to cash in on Celtic’s draw at Hamilton after being held to a draw at home by St Johnstone this afternoon.
Derek McInnes side looked on course for full points after Simon Church opened the scoring ten minutes from half time but two minutes from full time the visitors drew level when Liam Craig scored from the penalty spot after being fouled by Ryan Jack.
A win would have cut the gap at the top of the table down to four points but despite drawing at Hamilton Celtic retain a six point advantage with 11 games left to play.
On Wednesday night Aberdeen travel to Dundee United who won 3-0 away to Ross County while Celtic host Dundee who were held to a 1-1 draw by Inverness Caley Thistle at Dens Park.
With Kilmarnock losing at Hearts Dundee United are eight points adrift of the Ayrshire side with a game less played. A win over Aberdeen on Wednesday would pull United back into within range of Killie and turn up the pressure with the post split fixtures pairing the bottom sides together in head-to-heads.
Before today’s match it was revealed that Adam Rooney could be out for six weeks after tearing a thigh muscle in training.
“Adam took a slight strain on his thigh doing some shootout training on Thursday,” McInnes explained. “It developed into something a bit more and you would have to suggest he will be out for the region of six weeks.
“We all know the importance of his goals but we still feel we have a good attacking threat in the team.
“It’s up to others to step up and that’s exactly what this squad is all about. You can’t let it beat you up and use it as an excuse. You have to overcome these things.”
