Adam Virgo has backed Leigh Griffiths after some fans criticised Celtic’s top scorer for missing a penalty at Hamilton.

After opening the scoring from the penalty spot in the first half Michael McGovern saved a 66th minute penalty from Griffiths with Accies equalising seven minutes later.

No one has driven Celtic’s title push more than Griffiths with the former Hibs striker rarely shying away from interacting with fans through social media.

Turning to twitter after the match Griffiths said: “Another poor penalty from me, hold my hands up, the best in the world miss pens, all about bouncing back now. Need 3 point Wednesday.”

That message didn’t go down well with everyone with some ‘fans’ interpreting it as a claim by Griffiths that he is among the best players in the world!

Virgo, who is carving out a career in media, sprung to the strikers defence tweeting: “@Leighgriff09 been brilliant all season for Celtic dread to think where they would be with out his goals this season New direction next year.”

Clarifying the matter Griffiths added: “And with the previous tweet, no I don’t think I’m the best in the world, but u see them saved, and they step back up. I apologise again.”

Griffiths has scored 25 of Celtic’s 70 Premiership goals with Tom Rogic the next highest scorer with 6 goals,

Aberdeen can reduce the gap at the top of the table down to four points if they can win at home to St Johnstone with the top two back in action on Wednesday when Celtic host Dundee with Aberdeen travelling to Dundee United.
