Joe LedleyJoe Ledley has been named as a substitute for Wales in their Euro 2016 opener against Slovakia in Bordeaux.

The former Celtic midfielder suffered a mild leg break against Stoke City on May 9 but has worked closely with the Welsh medical team to be ready for action 33 days late!

There is one shock in the Wales team with former Aberdeen loanee Danny Ward starting in goals due to an injury picked up by regular keeper Wayne Hennessey.

Discussing Ledley’s recovery Chris Coleman said: “To get to where he is, is an unbelievable job, just fantastic. He’s always been in my consideration and I think he is one of those players who is important on and off the pitch – his character, what he brings to the group.

“I’m not going to give anything away at the moment but he is available to play some part, whether that’s a start or to come on as a substitute.

“He’s been really impressive in training and for him to get to where he is now, considering where he came from at the end of the season – physically and mentally – he’s shown what he is made of. It’s a credit.”

Looking ahead to Thursday’s match against England Gareth Bale said: “England big themselves up before they have done anything. We have a lot more passion and pride about us than them.

“We will definitely show that. We believe we can beat them. It is like any derby, you don’t want to lose – especially to the enemy.

Even in the rugby we feel more pride and passion – our national anthem everyone sings. We know we are a smaller nation so we have to do everything in our power to get to the levels of other nations because they have a lot more players to choose from.”
