The SPFL You Tube channel has uncovered the goal that sent Didier Agathe from Hibs to a glittering career at Celtic.

In just his third appearance for the Edinburgh side Agathe scored an incredible solo goal in a 5-1 win over Dundee. Watching from the stand was Martin O’Neill who ‘splashed out’ £50,000 on Agathe and 20 times that amount a few months later to sign the Dundee keeper Rab Douglas.

The rise of Agathe is one of the most appealing stories in Scottish football. After making a favourable impression with Raith Rovers Alex McLeish decided to offer a three month contract to move to Hibs.

That deal was enough to put the winger in the shop window that led all the way to the UEFA Cup Final in Seville where he was a key figure in Celtic’s successful run through the competition.

Announcing Agathe’s signing, on the same day as Alan Thompson joined Celtic, O’Neill said: “I know less about Didier but I’ve seen him play here and I think he’ll be a great acquisition for us.

“I just liked what I saw in him and obviously everybody in the country knew his contract was running out at Hibs so I asked Alex McLeish and we came to a compromise.

“I’m pleased he has come here, he’s quick, he can turn players, and he’s got a good chance to impress. On the whole I’m pleased to have both players on board.”

For his part Agathe admitted: “I am very pleased to have signed for Celtic as this is a huge club with a great history.
