Starstruck Mark McGhee has compared Joey Barton to Zlatan Ibrahimovic!
The Motherwell boss hosts Sevco in the BetFred League Cup tomorrow with McGhee hardly able to contain his excitement at the ageing mercenaries assembled by Mark Warburton.
Asked about Warbo’s summer jumble sale pick-ups McGhee drooled: “I think it’s fantastic, it’s like when you hear this summer the type of players going to the English Premiership like Ibrahimovic and people like that.
“The bigger names that come to ours the more glamour and attention it gives everybody. I think it’s great.
“I would have thought it helps us attract players as well. Guys like Carl McHugh come here to the Scottish League and think, ‘right okay, I’ll have some of that.”
As well as Barton, Warbo, who used to work as a city trader, has snapped up Niko Kranjcar, former Accrington duo Josh Windass and Matt Crooks, 37-year-old former QPR journeyman Clint Hill and goalkeeper Matt Gilks who hasn’t played a league match in two years.
Asked about a possible Ibrox fans boycott of away matches McGhee said: “One of the things we’d be looking forward to was welcoming away supporters here.
“It’s one of the things that makes it an atmosphere here. If you’ve got no-one from the away support here our own fans can get complacent but if they’re here then it gets our fans on their feet, gets them competitive. We need that.
“We need the support of our fans, but sometimes it comes not just our performance but the challenge that the away support brings.
“I’d be very disappointed if Rangers boycott games because I think everywhere would welcome them for the atmosphere.”
