Celtic have stepped up their interest in Nottingham Forest striker Lars Veldwijk.

The 24-year-old spent last season on loan at PEC Zwolle where he scored 14 goals in 33 appearances as PEC finished eighth in Eredivisie.

Respected Dutch website Elf Football have reported Celtic making a move for the striker that Forest paid £2m to Excelsior in June 2014.

Veldwijk failed to settle at the City Ground with Forest going regularly changing managers.

Celtic were well aware of Veldwijk from his days at Excelsior with a fee in the region of £1.5m needed to bring him to Glasgow.

Brendan Rodgers is looking for one more striker to compliment Moussa Dembele, Leigh Griffiths and Nadar Ciftci although the former Dundee United striker may be on the move during the transfer window,

Last night’s 1-0 defeat to Lincoln Red Imps has accelerated Rodgers transfer market interest with a striker and another central defender the priorities.

Speaking after the defeat the Celtic boss said: “We know the type of quality of player to get in and help the team and squad and that’s something we will work on. In the meantime we have enough quality players to get through into the next round. We have to stay together as a team.

It’s a two-legged affair and our objective here is to get through and I have seen enough in the game for us to get through in the second game.

The message to them (the fans) is to stay calm. This is a good group of players, they are good guys who are working hard and in a week’s time we will need the support next week to hopefully get the job done next week.”
