EBT beneficiary Stevie Thompson believes that Barrie McKay is the best winger in Scotland!

With the benefit of his new state funded salary as a BBC pundit the former St Mirren speedster really should be able to do his homework before letting his heart rule his head.

A look at Patrick Roberts in action against Astana last week would have given Thommo an insight into the demands of the full-time game.

The on-loan Manchester City star is more than two years younger than McKay who has yet to kick a ball in top tier football.

After grudgingly tipping Celtic to win the Premier League because ‘They’ve got the biggest budget so should be able to field the best team. They’ve got the most resources’, he perked up when it came to the his tip to be runners-up.

Going for Mark Warburton’s side as runners-up Thommo showed a little more enthusiasm claiming: “Their summer signing policy has been very good. When they make a change to the team, it doesn’t necessarily weaken the team. They’ve got a strong squad.”

And to top things off he was asked for a player to look out for, describing McKay with: “He was outstanding last year and he has started this season well. On his day, there is nobody better in his position in Scotland.”

Asked the same question Michael Stewart picked Roberts, Willie Miller went for Niall McGinn while Pat Bonner selected Tony Watt.

The BBC kick off their SPFL coverage this weekend with extensive radio coverage but again there will be no televised highlights until Sunday night with Thommo and the usual suspects providing their insight from the Sportscene studion.

In May 2012 the BBC produced a table that claimed Thommo had received £485,000 in EBT payments covered by a side letter protecting him from Income Tax.
