Griffiths explains gestures for tragic Kieran McDade

|

Leigh Griffiths has articulated his feelings over the tragic death of Kieran McDade on Friday while training with Dunbeth Boys Club in Coatbridge.

After opening the scoring in the 13th minute of the 4-1 win over Aberdeen the striker ran the length of the pitch to raise a t-shirt in memory of the teenager.

At the final whistle, Griffiths who had been substituted by Moussa Dembele in the 58th minute, returned to the pitch, raised the t-shirt then left the pitch wearing the t-shirt with RIP KIERAN 13 on the front.

Speaking after the match the striker said: “I was going to put it behind the other goal but it was a fitting tribute going behind our goal and thankfully I scored in the 13th minute, the boy’s age. It is a real shame for the family.

“They came into the reception and I have to give the gaffer and everyone credit for allowing that to happen before the game.

“They met the manager and a few players and they managed to enjoy the game and hopefully the wee man is up in the sky looking down and smiling that we got three points.”

The gestures were well received at the match and congratulated on social media.

Griffiths has had his troubles with twitter in the past but now uses the tool to communicate with supporters and also keep track of current issues.

A JUST GIVING trust set up for the McDade family attracted more than £10,000 within 24 hours of being set up.
