Celtic will become the first Scottish club to use Hawk-Eye goal line technology but the magic eye is for UEFA matches only.

Three years after the English Premier League installed the technology UEFA have followed suit with goal-line technology in play for the Champions League qualifier against Haporl Beer Sheva.

Seven cameras will be in use in each goalmouth to cut out honest mistakes with the system running flawlessly since it was introduced to England.

UEFA’s chief refereeing officer Pierluigi Collina said: “Goal-line technology and additional assistant referees complement each other perfectly.

“The main task of the AARs is not to control the goal-line and decide whether a ball has crossed it.

Rather they are responsible for monitoring everything that is happening in the penalty area overall, aiding the main referee in making important decisions in the box.

“Now, with goal-line technology focused on the goal-line, the additional assistants can focus exclusively on the control of other incidents in the penalty area, the most crucial area of the pitch.”

Hawk Eye is used only for goal-line decisions but UEFA is keen to trial more video evidence to help referees come to the right decisions.

Defining what decisions can be overturned is one of the issues currently being debated with video trials expected from next season with the Scottish Cup in line for the trial.

Following a meeting in March of the rule making International Football Board it was agreed to conduct a two year trial of video technology.

Jonathan Ford of the Welsh FA explained: “It’s a period of testing – we don’t want to spoil the fluidity or the beauty of the game, We want to ensure we have the benefits of video technology but avoid some of the pitfalls.”
