Davie Provan has urged Brendan Rodgers to speed up his transfer activity.
Scott Sinclair joins Moussa Dembele and Kolo Toure in the Rodgers camp as the former Liverpool boss goes about the task of overhauling the squad that he inherited from Ronny Deila.
Dembele and Toure started the Champions League qualifier against Astana on the substitutes bench with Provan relieved that his old side made it through with last season’s Euro flops.
“Last Wednesday’s side was inherited from Ronny Deila,” Provan highlighted in The Sun. “It wasn’t good enough for Europe under the Norwegian, and it won’t do for Rodgers either, unless he’s allowed to spend decent money,”
“Rodgers isn’t in Scotland to win ten-in-a-row. That achievement wouldn’t register anywhere outside of Scotland but the serious clubs would pay attention if he restored Celtic’s credibility in the Champions League.
“That will require better players than he has now and significant investment from his board.
Having paid top dollar to land Rodgers in the first place, Celtic have to match that ambition on the pitch.
“Having welcomed the signings of Dembele and Kolo Toure, Hoops fans are expecting some serious quality to be added.
“The emergence of Kieran Tierney, Eoghan O’Connell and Callum McGregor is encouraging at a club famous for rearing its own. But those kids will need some proper quality beside them if they are to develop.
“Israeli outfit Hapoel Beer Sheva are likely to prove tricky for Celtic in the Champions League play-off.”
Rodgers is believed to be chasing one more signing before the play-off signing deadline of 11pm on Monday although a wild card signing can be registered with UEFA until midnight on the day before the first leg on August 17.
