News that Torino may be prepared to pay £3m for Jozo Simunovic is bound to create a dilemma for Celtic.

Last August the Croat defender was viewed as the next big thing after being signed as the replacement for Virgil van Dijk.

Various fees ranging from £3m to €8m were quoted for the transfer from Dinamo Zagreb with the Croatian club publishing details of add-ons in anticipation of a two year stay at Celtic before being moved on to a more lucrative league.

A year on from joining Celtic most supporters are still in the dark about Simunovic’s ability. In the meantime Erik Sviachenko and Kolo Toure have been signed with Eoghan O’Connell emerging out of emergency. For good measure Jamie McCart made his competitive debut in last night’s win over Motherwell.

If a money back offer came in for Simunovic it would be hard to turn it away after 18 games that failed to leave any lasting impression.

After signing at the end of August the central defender made his debut in the 2-2 Europa League draw with Ajax on September 17, his next appearance was more than a month later.

In January Simunovic played his last match of the season, a knee operation was required after it was discovered he had been playing with a small broken bone.

Since then little has been heard of the player, no comeback dates have been set with little expectation about his return.

With a new manager in charge and a number of defensive options in place it’s unlikely that Celtic will be hard to deal with if a firm offer comes in for the forgotten defender.
