Six players to join Johansen on the way out of Celtic

|

Stefan Johansen’s departure to Fulham on Friday continued the gutting of the squad that Brendan Rodgers inherited from Ronny Deila.

The midfielder joins a list that now covers Charlie Mulgrew, Anthony Stokes, Colin Kazim Richards, Stefan Scepovic, Darnell Fisher and Carlton Cole who have moved on with Scott Allan sent on loan to Rotherham.

There are still around half a dozen players that look surplus to requirements with possibly more to go as Rodgers brings in the players that he wants to work with.

The Irishman is displaying the managerial qualities that Davie Hay showed as a player to earn the nickname of the Quiet Assassin.

Efe Ambrose was praised and excused after scoring an own goal for Barcelona in a friendly and has barely been seen since.

Craig Gordon has been the subject of Rodgers praise but at 2pm on Saturday the former Hearts and Sunderland keeper was watching from the dug out as Dorus de Vries made his Celtic debut.

Over the next four days transfer speculation will hit a frenzy, CLICK HERE for the gallery of six players most likely to be on their way out of Celtic.

Efe Ambrose

EFE AMBROSE

It’s only a matter of timing when the erratic defender leaves Celtic for the last time. Rodgers tried to find a way to play Ambrose but the old failings continued.

An own goal against Barcelona proved to be the tipping point with Ambrose dropped from the squad that overcame Astana.

With his contract ticking down Celtic will be looking for a token fee, the player’s agent will be looking for a pay off to leave with some bartering to be done before the final farewell.

7. Emilio Izaguirre

EMILIO IZAGUIRRE

There was to be no fairytale return for Izzy following his emotional ‘farewell’ at the end of last season against Motherwell.

Kieran Tierney is without doubt the first choice left-back but it’s doubtful if Izzy is considered as an adequate back up.

There could have been an option for the Honduran as a left sided midfielder but that ship looks to have sailed as well.

Werder Bremen and Real Betis have been linked with Izaguirre, a bid of £500,000 will secure a deal with just personal terms to be resolved to wrap up six years of service

1. Kris Commons

KRIS COMMONS

Even a cameo role this season is looking unlikely with James Forrest rediscovering his form to join Scott Sinclair and Patrick Roberts as creative forces.

Commons game is markedly different but it’s difficult to see where he can fit into the side, his next move is far from predictable.

An ambitious English Championship would surely see the 10-15 goals a season that Commons can offer as a very worthwhile gamble, after five years service his departure, like Izaguirre will be a landmark in the club’s recent history.

ARMSTRONG

STUART ARMSTRONG

Whether James McCarthy arrives or not Armstrong has slipped alarmingly down the pecking order for midfield places.

It seems that a domineering central midfielder is Rodgers’ priority target- exactly what Celtic thought they were getting when they signed Armstrong 18 months ago.

Callum McGregor has earned the trust of the new manager who seems keen to give Ryan Christie and Liam Henderson an opportunity.

There shouldn’t be any shortage of offers for the midfielder with Celtic looking to recover their £1.5m investment.

DEDRYCK BOYATA

DEDRYCK BOYATA

Returned to first team action against Inter Milan but was playing alongside Ambrose in the Development League against Kilmarnock on Tuesday night.

There are a number of candidates in front of the Belgian for a place in central defence with little likelihood of Boyata forcing his way back into the team.

Last season there was little to get excited about in Boyata’s displays although being billed in the same bracket as Jason Denayer and Virgil van Dijk didn’t do him any favours.

With a couple of international caps and Manchester City on his CV there are bound to be a couple of clubs willing to give Boyata a chance.

GMS

GARY MACKAY-STEVEN

Like Commons he has still to play this season, like Commons it’s difficult to see where he could fit in to the current side.

GMS looks destined to be remembered for a small golden period shortly after signing for Ronny Deila- from last season it was steadily downhill in common with most of the squad.

Ross County have been linked with a loan move but a move to England seems more likely with little loss involved after Dundee United were given a token fee for the last four months.
