Craig Gordon is convinced that Celtic’s defence is going to get stronger.

Sunday’s win over Rangers was the third clean sheet in a row that the defence had racked up after a difficult start to the season.

It took until the seventh game of the season, away to Dundee, for the bhoys to record their first domestic clean sheet with Gordon losing his place to Dorus de Vries during that spell.

The return of the Scotland keeper and the emergence of Jozo Simunovic has added a degree of stability at the back with Gordon expecting the defensive bond to go from strength to strength.

Jozo is a great player, still so young as well,” the hoops keeper said. “He’s a fantastic centre-half, he’s got everything.

Jozo is quick, strong, good in the air and calm on the ball. For the way we want to play he’s a great guy to have in there. Between Simunovic and Erik Sviatchenko we’ve had a good understanding.

Against Rangers, we felt fairly comfortable although at 0-0 it’s one counter-attack from going behind. So although we were slightly the more dominant team during the 90 minutes, while it remains 0-0 you always run the risk of losing with one goal. So it was nice to eventually get the goal that won it.

Since Rodgers arrived the emphasis has been firmly on attacking with a support network built around Leigh Griffiths or Moussa Dembele.

The goals have flown freely with both strikers in double figures while Scott Sinclair, James Forrest and Tom Rogic chipping in with their share of goals.

Building a similar unit at the back will make Celtic a much more formidable unit with Gordon encouraged by the way that his team-mates are operating.

There were certainly a lot more saves being made down the other end,” the keeper added. “I thought Matt Gilks had a great game. He made a number of saves to keep them in the game for as long as he did.

At my end there was a block from a cut-back, when Jozo got in the way of a goalbound effort which was quite dangerous but when they were in our final third we got our blocks in.

That’s credit to the guys in front of me that there wasn’t a great deal for me to deal with at Hampden.

At 0-0 it’s about keeping concentration and making sure we’re keeping the back door shut as we continue to press to get the lead. We did that fairly well with the way we had a grip on the game.”
