Sevco have confirmed that Joey Barton’s suspension has been extended by another week.

After being told to stay away from the club following a training ground incident the midfielder was given a three week suspension but no fine.

The initial suspension was intended to resolve the situation but this morning, a day before Barton is due to return to the club, it has been announced that the suspension has been extended for a further week.

Today’s announcement read: “JOEY BARTON has been informed that his suspension by the Club has been extended by one week.

This is part of a formal disciplinary procedure and Joey has been instructed not to return to Ibrox or Auchenhowie until further notice.

Neither party (the Club and player) will make any further statement or comment.”

Barton’s last appearance on a football pitch was against Celtic on September 10 meaning that he’ll have missed out on at least five weeks of action should a solution be found to the problem.

At the age of 34 and having missed out on a full pre-season due to his media commitments and being banned from entering the USA it seems unlikely that Barton will be able to make a quick return to action.

The exact nature of the training ground incident that caused the suspension has never been revealed with most of the speculation suggesting a clash with Andy Halliday or Mark Warburton.

The former city trader was absent when Barton signed on a summer Bosman with the events of the last month suggesting that the signing wasn’t one that the manager was keen on.
