Alex Rae is back in football as assistant coach to the Scotland u-19 squad.

The former Rangers (IL) midfielder was sacked by St Mirren last month after a grim start to the season, leaving the Paisley side with a record of 13 wins, 13 defeats and 6 draws from 32 matches.

According to a report in The Sun Rae has been called in to assist Ricky Sbragia who recently swapped jobs with Scot Gemmill with the former Sunderland manager stepping down from u-21 duties following a 4-0 defeat away to Ukraine.

The Sun claims: “SunSport Online understands Scots under-19s coach Ricky Sbragia has invited the former Falkirk, Rangers, Wolves and Sunderland star to assist him for upcoming Euro qualifiers, including Israel on October 30.

Rae, 47, was sacked as Saints boss following a poor start to the season and has since been a radio pundit.

But he’s jumped at the chance to return to coaching even just for a temporary spell, delighted to be able to work with our elite prospects.”

Prior to taking on the St Mirren job Rae had worked as assistant manager to Paul Ince at MK Dons and Notts County after a brief spell in charge of Dundee.

In the u-21 campaign just completed Scotland finished in fifth place out of six- 13 points behind group winners Macedonia.

Two wins over bottom placed Northern Ireland brought in six points with home draws against Iceland and Ukraine making up the total of eight points from 10 matches.
