Chris Sutton has trashed Mark Warburton’s Hampden hard luck story.

After losing out to Moussa Dembele’s late strike the Sevco boss has taken encouragement from the fact that it was only a single goal that defeated his side.

During the second half Celtic laid siege to the Sevco goal with veterans Matt Gilks and Clint Hill at full stretch to keep the hoops at bay. When that failed there was always the intervention of Craig Thomson to call upon.

Sutton and Warbo, who used to work as a city trader, have been firing comments at each other since the season started with the BT pundit quick to pour cold water on the excuses from the Ibrox boss.

Writing in the Daily Record Sutton said: “Mark Warburton claimed that Rangers are narrowing the gap on Celtic after going down by a single goal in their Betfred Cup semi.

The Ibrox boss said after the 5-1 league defeat at Parkhead that there wasn’t much of a gulf and now he is saying the gap has narrowed.

Yes the scoreline was closer but clearly they haven’t got close enough! The gulf is enormous!

Let’s be absolutely honest – it was a total mismatch at Hampden. If that was a boxing match then Celtic would have won every round comfortably – in fact, the fight would have been stopped!”

Sutton added: “Warburton was far more pragmatic and his side were absolutely powderpuff in attack.

They had the one chance where Jozo Simunovic got the block in the second half on Jason Holt’s shot. But they rarely threatened and Kenny Miller was isolated.

I expected a reaction from Celtic after the defeat to Monchengladbach in the Champions League but I just think there is a huge gulf and it’s as simple as that.

Celtic have recruited well and whatever way you look at it Warburton’s summer shopping wasn’t good enough.”
