The bizarre Ibrox comfort blanket

Whether it’s an elaborate example of spin or not the comfort coming out of Sevco after losing to Celtic yesterday is truly baffling.

For a club that likes to draw on the achievements of it’s former identity the thought of being consoled by a 1-0 defeat seems bizarre.

In certain circumstances a defeat can provide hope. When you’ve lost out to an unfortunate goal or been the victim of poor refereeing there can be some consolation in defeat.

Yesterday at Hampden, to me anyway it was another emphatic lesson handed out to Sevco without the scoreline to highlight the gulf between the teams.

Craig Gordon was barely tested. Yes Jozo Simunovic blocked a shot from Jason Holt that was looking netbound.

Against that Celtic passed up on a dozen or more decent chances. Scott Sinclar hit the bar, Matt Gilks twice saved one-on-one from the former Aston Villa man, Tom Rogic had a few near misses and Craig Thomson disallowed a perfectly good ‘goal’ from Erik Sviatchenko.

Following on from the lead taken by Mark Warburton, Clint Hill and Gilk’s have been offering up their messages of hope. If anyone is in agreement with that assessment their delusions are even deeper than imagined.

When avoiding a 5-1 defeat is progress the deep rooted problems are even more severe than yesterday’s performance hinted at.

With one trophy hunt ended some focus may be placed on Warburton’s disastrous summer signing spree that appears to have added little or nothing to last season’s squad.

A multitude of financial problems are somehow being held at bay but the day of reckoning is surely heading down Edmiston Drive with the big house looking vulnerable inside and out.
