Airdrie United fans were left in the dark about the role of Gordon Dalziel at their club, formerly known as Clydebank.

In midweek the former Rangers (IL) and Manchester City striker was appointed to perform a root and branch review of the Lanarkshire club with a remit to cover every area of the club.

Yesterday, rather than get hands on with his new role Dalziel was on Radio Clyde duty at the Celtic v Motherwell match with Mark McGhee’s approach to the match under review.

Airdrie’s match with Peterhead didn’t kick off until 5.15pm but rather than watch his new club in action Dalziel was on open line duty answering calls from listeners to the show.

After his side lost 3-1 to Peterhead, Airdrie boss Kevin McBride was careful with his words as he was questioned about Dalziel’s role at the club.

I’m not going to comment on it, you will have to ask Tom (Wotherspoon, chairman) and Gordon about what’s going to happen,” the current Airdrie boss said. “I’ve met Gordon a couple of times and he’s coming in on Monday to do whatever he is going to do.”

Asked if he will still have full control over team selection, McBride replied: “You will need to go and ask the chairman that.

I don’t want to start saying about what the future is going to be. It has been a difficult week. There is no hiding behind that.

My main thing was trying to keep all this away from the players which is very difficult in this day and age.”

Announcing Dalziel’s role Wotherspoon said: “Gordon has come in to have a look at every aspect of the football operation.

“Having experienced success in his playing and coaching career, he will make recommendations to the board regarding changes we can make to take the club forward.

“Nothing has changed regarding the coaching setup, Kevin McBride is still head coach and will look after first-team affairs with his coaching staff”.
