Summer transfer target James McCarthy was at Hampden today enjoying Celtic’s 1-0 win over Sevco.

If the rumour mill and fate had been kinder towards the end of August the Ireland midfielder could have been out on the park rather than watching from the stand wearing a green and white scarf.

McCarthy was missing from the Everton side that lost to Burnley on Saturday but was in place to enjoy Celtic’s semi final success at Hampden.

Hoops fan Jamie Fulton spotted the midfielder at Hampden and posted a picture with 25-year-old who started his career at Hamilton Accies before moving south to Wigan.

McCarthy was brought up just a few miles away from Hampden in Castlemilk and has never hidden his support for Celtic.

Speculation peaked towards the end of August that McCarthy could be on his way to Celtic on a loan deal with Brendan Rodgers admitting that he had hoped to bring in another new face before the transfer window closed.

After the transfer window had closed Rodgers admitted: “I wanted to bring in another creative midfield player to support the boys we have here, but I will never bring in anyone for the sake of bringing in a player.

It has to be the right player, has to be the right profile, otherwise you waste time, money and energy

We tried everything we could to get the right quality of player, but the players were not available and you can’t get a player if a club doesn’t want to sell them or loan them.”
