Gordon Strachan was still cracking the gags despite Scotland’s 3-0 defeat from England killing off hopes of reaching the 2018 World Cup Finals in Russia.

Last night’s defeat leaves Scotland trailing England, Lithuania, Slovakia and Slovenia in Group F with only a win over Malta and draw with Lithuania to show after four matches.

Since the 3-0 defeat in Slovakia the spotlight has been on Strachan with the goodwill from a near miss for Euro 2016 running dry.

After the loss in Slovakia Strachan deflected questions about his future by claiming that he was more concerned about the impact on his players and the fans.

It was the same script again last night before he finally answered a question about his own position.

When will I think about me?” he replied. “Probably when I’m just about to die. I’ll say: ‘Yeah, how did I get on God.”

That reply didn’t create many laughs in the media room with the Scotland boss reverting back to a familiar theme.

At this moment in time, if you think I’m thinking about myself at this moment, then you don’t know me,” he added.

If you think I’m thinking about that at this time, you don’t know me. You absolutely don’t know me.

Sitting here and worrying about myself? You’re wrong. Completely wrong. All these guys travelled down here, their families travelled down here.”

Scotland’s next match is on March 26 at home to Slovenia with Strachan expected to step down within the next week.
