McGhee slams Beaton over ghost goal

Mark McGhee slammed referee John Beaton after his side’s defeat at Dundee and dragged up a controversy involving the same official from a year ago.

Motherwell’s 2-0 defeat at Dens Park leaves them one point off bottom spot with McGhee far from happy with the match officials as he puts on his SFA hat to assist Gordon Strachan on international duty.

Beaton had had a nightmare season since awarding Hearts a penalty against Celtic on the opening day for a dive by Jamie Walker that later earned the midfielder a two match ban.

It looks like being a season long scrap at the bottom of the table to avoid relegation with McGhee in no mood to extend Beaton any sympathy.

Speaking to his club TV Channel McGhee described the decision as shocking and scandalous.

The goal that wasn’t given is clearly a goal,” the Motherwell boss said. “There is no doubt. At the time I thought that and, having looked on the camera, it’s a goal.

“It didn’t cause us to lose the game but I think it caused us not to win the game.”

Asked if he had spoken to the officials about the incident McGhee added: “They don’t give you any explanation. He never gave me any explanation last year when he gave a penalty against Chris Cadden and we drew 2-2 here. The same referee.

“I have to say though, the linesman has got to help him. There are two of them there and they can’t see it. I can’t understand it.”

Saturday’s result lifts Dundee onto 12 points alongside Motherwell and Hamilton Accies with all three clubs a point ahead of Ross County at the foot of the table.
