Andrea Schubert believes that Celtic’s win against Manchester City backfired on the hoops when he took Borussia Monchengladbach to Glasgow.
Following a 3-3 draw with Pep Guardiola’s side hopes were high that Brendan Rodgers side could go one better against the Germans who had lost both of their opening matches in Group C.
Gladbach then handed out a footballing lesson to the hoops with the scoreline not reflecting the gulf between the sides.
Schubert knows that a win tonight gives Gladbach a great chance of progressing to the knock out phase but is aware that Celtic are unlikely to be as poor as the side that they beat in Glasgow a fortnight ago.
“In the match against Manchester City, they showed an outstanding performance at home and City was also on the verge of a defeat,” the German coach stated. “As a result, expectations have changed somewhat.
“It was after they had almost beaten Manchester, they would have [thought of] Gladbach as supposedly the weakest opponents of the group – and you’ve been in a situation where they had something to lose.
“But Celtic is always a good and dangerous team. They have nothing to lose. You can therefore take a risk – we do not, we want to win this game and secure [the game].
“We will try to dominate so that we have the event under control, allowing little to no chances and hopefully play out so we also make goals.”
If Gladbach beat Celtic tonight Manchester City will have to win at home to Barcelona to stay in front of the Germans.
City then have to travel to Borussia Park on matchday five with Gladbach knowing that two home wins could secure their place in the last 16 before they complete the group phase in the Nou Camp.
