Desperate Mark Warburton has compared Joe Garner to a £30m striker.

The former city trader likes nothing better than to recall the incredible achievements he pulled off during his 18 month stint in charge of Brentford.

Achieving promotion from League One and a play-off place the following season is certainly noteworthy but despite being informed in February 2015 that his contract wouldn’t be renewed no other Championship clubs made him an offer.

With Sevco struggling to come to terms with life in the top flight of Scottish football attention is being paid to Warbo’s 11 summer signings.

Clint Hill has replaced Danny Wilson at centre-half in recent weeks but the bottom line is that the team is no better than last year- just much more expensive.

Garner was the only arrival that cost a transfer fee with the £1.8m spent bringing the striker in from Preston North End yielding just three goals- the same figure as Kenny Miller and Andy Halliday.

Defending his record signing Warbo said: “Joe Garner is 10 games in. I use the example of Andre Gray, who is probably worth £30million now. He scored two goals in 10 for Burnley and six in 20, so Joe’s ahead of him.”

Gray is one of Warbo’s favourite yards, telling anyone who will listen how he signed the striker from Luton for £500,000 then, after Warbo had left was sold on to Burnley for £9m after a year in the Championship.

Last season in The Championship Garner scored six goals.

If Warbo can recreate that sort of magic on Martyn Waghorn, James Tavernier, Michael O’Halloran, Joe Doodo and Jason Holt, as well as Garner then Sevco’s financial worries will finally be over.
