The incredible delusions of James Tavernier

Deluded James Tavernier believes that his Sevco team-mates are about to rattle off nine back-to-back wins in the Premier Division and will easily finish in second place- at least!

If it wasn’t so laughable it would be one of those famous interviews that get pinned up on dressing room walls to inspire opponents.

With a looks at the league table the only feelings that Tav’s thoughts are likely to inspire are ones of sympathy.

Having won five matches out of 12 so far in the top flight it looks like it’ll be spring time before Tav and his mates get their hands on a ninth win bonus from Dave King’s war-chest.

For whatever reason it seems that pulling on a 32Red jersey instantly invokes a superiority complex that has no grounds in reality.

After a 3-0 home win over Kilmarnock a few weeks back Joe Garner explained how he wasn’t even looking at the clubs behind him, the following weekend Sevco drew 0-0 at Ross County to slip back to third place behind Aberdeen.

Having toiled against the teams in the bottom half of the table Mark Warburton’s side face a daunting schedule before the winter break with matches coming up against Hearts home and away, Celtic, Aberdeen and St Johnstone.

Halfing the points in those matches would be a big improvement on the one point from nine taken so far but the former Wigan ace is expecting 27 points and nine win bonuses from the next nine matches!

We have a massive six weeks coming up with some massive games to play,” Tav said. “It’s a great run of games and I think all the boys are relishing it.

I want maximum points and that’s not unrealistic. If we play the way we can do we can get maximum points but even if we draw one out of all of those games then we’ve had a really good run.”

It gets better, Tav adds: “We’re Glasgow Rangers we shouldn’t be expecting to lose any of those games.

We want to win all of those games and that’s why I want to see us getting maximum points. There’s no doubt that would be a major statement.

We’ve shown how good we can play this season and we’ve sometimes shown flaws when we’ve not played that well. We feel we’re good enough, 100 per cent. Second place should now be a minimum.

We haven’t played Hearts as yet but we have played Aberdeen and if we play to our potential, with the players we’ve got then we won’t fear anyone in the league.

We believe we can finish second, easy. The games where we’ve dropped points have been all down to us. It has never been the case that a team has been better than us.

We haven’t been great on the day, or we’ve made a mistake but we fully believe we are better than the other teams in the league.”

Prior to joining Sevco Tav has starred at Bristol City, Wigan, Rotherham, Shrewsbury, MK Dons, Sheffield Wednesday, Carlisle and Gateshead after starting his career at Newcastle where he made one first team appearance in an FA Cup tie.
