Brendan Rodgers has described Callum McGregor as an outstanding young player.

At 23-years-of-age young may be stretching things a little but in his third season of first team football the local lad has made a big impression on his new boss.

McGregor spent a season battling relegation on loan at Notts County before being given his chance by Ronny Deila ahead of Dylan McGeouch and Filip Twardzik.

Having taken his chance under Deila McGregor is excelling under Brendan Rodgers and rewarding his manager’s faith.

In the recent away match at Motherwell the Celtic boss altered his team’s shape to introduce McGregor to the side with the substitute kicking off the fightback with a goal within three minutes of the restart.

Praising McGregor Rodgers told the Daily Mail: “He’s an outstanding young player for the squad here. He doesn’t always get the credit for what his qualities are, but managers and coaches will always appreciate it.

Sometimes it’s the guys who make the heroic blocks and score the goals that get all the credit but he’s a young player who is very important to our squad.

We have a number of those players. If you ask them to play at left-back, wide on the right or central midfield then they play the position without fuss. They don’t moan or groan and get on with doing what is best for the team.”

Despite not being a first team regular McGregor has been involved in 25 games this season with both goals coming recently, in the away matches against Motherwell and Partick Thistle.
