Brendan Rodgers has revealed that it’s not always for fitness reasons that he substitutes Tom Rogic.

The midfielder has been in outstanding form this season but rarely lasts the full 90 minutes.

Around the hour mark the number 18 board tends to be raised to signal that it’s time for the Australian to take a break- usually after scoring.

Six months into the Rodgers reign it seems strange that a 23-year-old is unable to complete 90 minutes alongside the rest of his team-mates.

Australians are known for their healthy, sporty lifestyles adding to the question marks about the Celtic midfielder.

Speaking to The Sun Rodgers said: “Tom’s got huge potential. His bodywork is as good as you’ll get.

Last Saturday (at Motherwell), he played right the way through and was a big player at the end.

Sometimes when I sub Tom it’s not necessarily how he’s playing or he can’t last. Sometimes I just need to shore up the game with a more defensive type player.

His contribution against Manchester City was top-class and the beauty is he’s committed here. He sees this as his place to develop.”

Rogic played the full 90 minutes against Motherwell and Barcelona but has regularly been substitued between the 60th and 70th minute in most games.”
